The APACHE II (Acute Physiology
and Chronic Health
Evaluation II) method outlined by Knaus et al. in 1985.
has been validated in many clinical trials, and is a commonly used ICU severity of illness estimation.
Scores calculated by the APACHE II method range from 0 to 71. Higher scores indicate greater severity of illness, and an increased risk of death.
